What is an ASBL in Belgium?
The Association Sans But Lucratif (ASBL) is a legal structure that lets a group of people pursue a non-profit goal: social, cultural, sports, educational, philanthropic or religious.
Unlike a company, the ASBL cannot distribute profits to its members. Any surplus must be reinvested in the association's purpose.
Since the 2019 reform of the Code of Companies and Associations (CSA), the ASBL can carry out commercial activities, provided the income exclusively serves its non-profit purpose. Only 2 founding members are required to set up an ASBL.
